The Wesleyan Christian School secondary curriculum offers maximum flexibility in course options to allow students to pursue their areas of interest while meeting their graduation requirements in an academically rigorous atmosphere. All subjects are thoroughly biblically integrated. Teaching is hands-on and encourages analytical thinking and questioning.
Good communication with parents is a high priority. Renweb is our online school management program that allows parents to see their student’s grades, lesson plans, and homework. Parents are encouraged to keep up with their student’s progress in each subject area by checking Renweb. Parents can visit or e-mail their student’s teacher directly.
Secondary Course Descriptions
Bible-7th Grade
Bible-7th Grade focuses on the study of character through thirty-four character traits highlighted in the curriculum Character Quest. The class places an emphasis on personal growth, life application, and scripture memory. Each character trait will conclude with an in-depth evaluation of how Christ demonstrated the given trait.
Bible-8th Grade
Bible-8th covers a wide range of topics that cover Paul’s missionary journeys and Joshua and the Judges. The students will also read and discuss In His Steps by Charles Sheldon and Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan. Through the text and bible study students will experience a Bible based instruction of how character shapes our daily walk with God and fellow Christians.
7th Grade Math
The seventh grade math class encompasses the study of variable usage in equations, applying variables to word problems, use of decimals, geometric figures, factors, multiples, fractions, percent, area, volume, integers and probability.
7th Grade Life Science
Life Science is the study of living things. Students will learn an appreciation for God’s creation and discover how our planet was uniquely created for life. This lab science will cover topics of cytology, genetics, origins, classification, Kingdom Animalia and ecology.
7th Grade World History
A survey of the history of the world from a conservative, Christian perspective as part of a well-rounded program designed to give students a deeper understanding of our world history and a working knowledge of world geography.
8th Grade Pre-Algebra
The Pre-Algebra course is the connection between arithmetic and algebra. Students will gain the needed skills to advance to Algebra I by reinforcing mathematical concepts taught in previous years and introducing new concepts needed for advancement.
Algebra I
The Algebra I course introduces the concept of real numbers and familiarizing the students with all of the operations between real numbers, working with multivariable equations, polynomials, fractions, functions and linear equations.
Earth Science 8th Grade
This course will help students see that everything is a beautiful creation of God. By studying the bible’s origins of the earth, the amazing beauty of the cosmos, the intricacy of the atmosphere and its weather, the resourcefulness of the lithosphere (earth itself), and the systems prevalent in the hydrosphere, students will be able to see the obvious design from a Creator in our world. This course will also instill in the students the ability to look at science with a Biblical worldview.
8th Grade United States History
A survey of the history of the United States from a conservative, Christian perspective as part of a well-rounded program designed to give students a deeper understanding of our nation’s history and a working knowledge of the geography of the Western Hemisphere.
9th Grade Bible (Bible 1)
First semester teaches The United Kingdom (Kings of Israel-A) which covers the lives of Saul, David, and Solomon the kings of the united kingdom of Israel and Judah. Second semester is the Divided Kingdom (Kings of Israel-B) and studies the kings of Judah, the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities, and the return of the Jewish people to Jerusalem.
English 1 (9th Grade)
In English 1, The ABeka work text concentrates on reviewing and building grammar concepts. The Bob Jones text helps direct students on the use of conflict, characters, themes, structure, point of view, and moral tone in literature.
Physical Science 9th Grade
In this course students will develop an understanding of the scientific method, basic chemistry, and basic physics. Students will also learn how to implement the scientific method into lab procedures and how to conduct experiments. It will use both independent study and group hands-on activities to develop learning.
9th Grade World Geography
This course is an opportunity to learn about God’s world and the people that inhabit it. The students will study political and physical geography.
9th Grade World History and Cultures
This course follows the development of civilization from creation to the present. The class goal is to understand God’s presence through history and how he worked in the events of man to accomplish his perfect will.
Geometry
Geometry begins by reviewing some of the basic concepts of geometry such as points, lines, planes and angles. The course will teach the concept of proofs to give the students an understanding of how the basic theorems of Geometry are formed. The course will also cover deductive and inductive reasoning, parallel lines and planes, triangle congruency, quadrilaterals, geometric inequalities, similar polygons, right triangles, circles, constructions and loci, areas of plane figures, areas and volumes of solids and coordinate geometry.
10th Grade Bible (Bible 2)
This course will assist the student in developing an understanding of the essential doctrines of the Christian faith. Students will be guided through a better understanding of Bibliology, Theology, Christology, Pneumatology, Anthropology, Soteriology, Ecclesiology, Angelology, and Eschatology.
10th Grade American Government
A survey of American government from a conservative, Christian perspective as part of a well-rounded program designed to give students a deeper understanding of our nation’s government and a working knowledge of its principles. This course will also emphasize the responsibilities that come with our rights as American citizens.
10th Grade Oklahoma History
A survey of the history of Oklahoma presented as our Lord’s story of the events which led up to the development of this great state and how it has grown economically, culturally and socially.
English 2 (10th Grade)
English 2 curriculum expands the English 1 coursework to include composition skills enhanced through essay writing based on literature. A research project is included as well. Students continue with the ABeka series of grammar; in addition, application of vocabulary skills within composition is addressed.
Algebra II
Algebra II begins by reviewing some of the basic concepts of algebra such as working with real numbers, order of operations and one variable equation. The course will then introduce the concept of proofs to give the students an understanding of how basic theorems of real numbers are formed, and will also cover working with inequalities, linear equations, polynomials, rational expressions, irrational numbers, quadratic equations, exponential functions, sequences and an introduction to Trigonometry.
11th Grade Bible (Bible 3)
First semester uses the Abeka curriculum Genesis First Things, that covers the major events of the book of Genesis. The goal of the course is to help the students understand where we as a human race originated, and God’s great and wonderful purpose for each of us. Second semester uses the Abeka curriculum Life Management under God. This curriculum teaches an application of Biblical principles in practical areas of life like job success, managing money, dating, preparing for marriage, first aid, drugs, gambling, and other issues that teenagers might face in today’s culture.
11th Grade U.S. History
This course is a summary of the history of our country from its founding to the present. Our goal is to understand God’s presence throughout our history and to apply lessons learned from history to our lives.
English 3/American Literature
English 3 students focus heavily on American literature, composition, and preparation for the ACT. The Bob Jones literature book offers our nation’s literature from a Christian perspective, examining the major literary periods in American history. Composition skills are enhanced through essay responses to the literature while displaying vocabulary competence through application. Students are also provided opportunities to prepare for the ACT, targeting the April exam.
Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus
First semester Pre-Calculus introduces the concept of polynomial functions, understanding functions graphically as well as using them for computations, inequalities, properties of functions, exponents, logarithms, and analytic geometry during the first semester. Second semester will begin the Trigonometry portion of the course where we will cover trigonometric equations, triangle trigonometry, trigonometric addition formulas, polar coordinates and complex numbers.
12th Grade Bible (Bible 4)
Students must be prepared to think biblically about all areas of life, and be equipped to give answers and reasons for their belief in a biblical worldview. This course will lay a foundation of understanding that provides a basis for the student’s own personal worldview. The text used for this course is Dr. David A. Noebel’s book Understanding the Times, published by Summit Ministries.
English4/British Literature
English 4 students cover the development of the English language through the Old English, Middle English, and Renaissance periods, ending with an overview of British literature, especially Shakespeare. Students prepare for college level composition; essay styles examined include narrative, argument, comparison, expository, and descriptive. Effective research techniques and proper MLA application are included within the composition structure.
Biology 1
Biology is the study of living things. This lab science includes eight major topics:
* Cytology: the study of cells and cellular processes
* Genetics: the study of heredity
* Origins: The scientific and theological debate for the origination of the universe and everything in it.
* Classification: how living thing are organized into groups
* Microbiology: Kingdom Protista, Eubacteria, and Archaebacteria
* Kingdom Fungi
* Botany: the study of plant structure and processes
* Ecology: the study of the environment and interactions between organisms
Biology II (Biology 2)
Biology is the study of living things. Biology II includes one semester of zoology and one semester of human anatomy and physiology. This lab science includes seven major topics:
* Invertebrates: characteristics and anatomy
* Arthropods: characteristics and anatomy
* Vertebrates: characteristics and anatomy
* Dissection Techniques
* Ecology: the study of the environment and interactions between organisms
* Human Anatomy
* Human Physiology
Chemistry
This course will help science students see the complexity and design in the natural laws and processes found in the study of chemistry. The students will be able to see in hands-on ways how God has created laws and processes that govern our world. Students will incorporate lab procedures they learned during earlier science classes and continue to build upon that knowledge.
